How To Use A Mediana AED
In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to use a Mediana AED effectively during a cardiac emergency. Although we are using a semi-automatic Mediana A16 in this demonstration, it’s important to note that other Mediana AED units function in a similar way. Training models also mimic live units closely, making them useful for practice. Please remember, only use a live AED on someone during a confirmed cardiac emergency.
Step 1: Assess the Scene
As you arrive, your safety must come first. Always stop, think, and act before approaching. Look around for any immediate danger. If available, put on gloves, but don’t waste precious seconds searching for them. Time is critical.
Step 2: Check the Victim
Gently shake the person’s shoulders and speak loudly to check for responsiveness. If there’s no response, open the airway and check for breathing for up to 10 seconds. If the person is not breathing or breathing abnormally, start CPR immediately.
Step 3: Call for Help
Get someone to call emergency services and bring the AED. If you’re alone, dial EMS using speakerphone while performing chest compressions. Continue CPR until the AED arrives.
Step 4: Prepare the AED
Once the AED arrives, turn it on by pressing the power button. The unit will begin issuing voice instructions. Ask someone to continue CPR while you prepare the device.
Step 5: Prepare the Chest Area
- Cut or remove clothing covering the chest.
- Remove jewellery, patches, or anything that may interfere with the pads.
- Use the razor in the prep kit to shave excess hair if needed.
- Identify pacemakers or scars and avoid pad placement directly over them.
Step 6: Apply the Pads
Choose adult or child mode using the toggle switch. Open the pad packaging. Place one pad below the right collarbone. Place the second pad under the left armpit. For children and infants, apply the pads on the chest and back as illustrated in the diagram.
Step 7: Stand Clear and Let the AED Analyse
The AED will now analyse the heart rhythm. Make sure no one is touching the person. Say loudly, “Everyone stand clear!” Wait for the AED to assess.
Step 8: Deliver the Shock (If Advised)
If the AED advises a shock, press the flashing shock button when prompted. Ensure no one is in contact with the victim before doing so. If no shock is advised, continue CPR without delay.
Step 9: Resume CPR
After the shock, or if no shock is advised, the AED will guide you to resume CPR. Perform 30 chest compressions followed by 2 rescue breaths, if trained. Otherwise, continue chest compressions only. Maintain a rate of 100–120 compressions per minute, using the built-in metronome for guidance.
Step 10: Continue Until Help Arrives
The AED will re-analyse the heart rhythm every two minutes and guide you accordingly. Continue following the prompts until professional help arrives or the person shows clear signs of recovery. If alone, keep going until you physically cannot continue.
Conclusion
Knowing how to use a Mediana AED can dramatically improve someone’s chances of survival. Speed and confidence matter. The AED is designed to guide you with clear, calm instructions. Don’t panic. Follow the prompts. Trust the technology. You could save a life.
Even if you’re unfamiliar with the specific model, remember that all AEDs work in a similar way. Turn the device on and follow its instructions. Practice regularly and stay prepared—because every second counts in a cardiac emergency.
