How To Use An iPAD AED

Introduction

In this training session, we’ll explain how to use an iPAD AED during a cardiac emergency. We’re using the iPAD SPR training AED, although the iPAD SP1 and NFK models operate in very similar ways. Training AEDs function just like live units, except they do not deliver actual shocks. In this demonstration, we’re simulating the procedure only. Never apply a real AED unless there’s a genuine cardiac emergency.

Initial Assessment

As you arrive at the scene, your first step is to assess the area for safety. Look around and check for anything that could pose a threat to you or others. Always remember: stop, think, and act. If you have gloves available, put them on quickly. However, don’t delay care if gloves are not immediately accessible.

Check for Responsiveness

Next, approach the casualty. Speak loudly and gently shake their shoulders to check for a response. If there is no reaction, open the airway and check for normal breathing for up to 10 seconds. If the person is not breathing or is gasping, begin CPR right away.

Call for Help

Ask someone nearby to call emergency services and retrieve the AED. If you’re alone, call 999 using speakerphone so you can continue chest compressions while on the phone. Continue CPR until the AED arrives.

Prepare the AED

As soon as the iPAD AED arrives, turn it on by pressing the green power button. The device will activate voice prompts to guide you through each step. While the AED is preparing, ask someone to continue CPR if possible. This helps maintain blood flow to the brain and other vital organs.

Expose the Chest and Apply Pads

Remove or cut away the clothing from the chest. This includes removing bras or anything else that could interfere with pad placement. Quickly inspect the chest for any medical patches or pacemakers. Remove patches and avoid placing pads directly over pacemakers. If the patient has excess chest hair and you have a razor, shave the area where the pads will go. Also, remove any necklaces or jewellery near the pad placement area.

Select Pad Configuration

Choose between adult or child mode using the designated button or switch. Then, remove the pads from their packaging and apply them as shown in the diagrams on the pads.

  • Place one pad below the collarbone on the right side of the chest.
  • Place the other pad under the left armpit on the side of the chest.
  • For children or infants, place the pads on the front and back.

Analyse and Deliver Shock

Firmly press the pads onto the skin to ensure good contact. Once in place, the iPAD AED will begin analysing the heart rhythm. Immediately stop touching the patient. Loudly say, “Everyone stand clear!” to alert others nearby.

If the AED determines a shock is needed, it will announce this. With a fully automatic AED, the shock will be delivered automatically. If using a semi-automatic model, you will need to press the shock button when prompted. Always ensure everyone is clear before doing so.

Continue CPR

After the shock (or if no shock is advised), begin CPR again immediately. Follow the AED’s metronome to maintain the correct rhythm—100 to 120 compressions per minute. If trained and comfortable, give 30 compressions followed by two breaths. If not, continue with hands-only CPR.

The AED will reanalyse the heart rhythm every two minutes and provide further instructions. Keep following these prompts until emergency services arrive or the patient starts showing signs of life.

Final Notes

When learning how to use an iPAD AED, it’s essential to stay calm and confident. These devices are designed for ease of use, even in high-stress situations. The voice prompts will guide you step by step, so trust the process and act quickly.

While this demonstration focuses on the iPAD brand, nearly all AEDs operate in a similar way. If you ever encounter a different model, simply turn it on and follow the voice prompts. Preparation and knowledge save lives, and your actions could make all the difference in an emergency.
