How To Use A Heartsine AED

How To Use A Heartsine AED

In this guide, we will walk you through how to use a Heartsine AED during a cardiac emergency. We’re using the Heartsine 350 Trainer AED for this demonstration, though the live AEDs—such as the 360 (fully automatic) and the 500 (with CPR feedback)—function very similarly.

First, always assess the scene before approaching. Stop, think, and make sure it’s safe for you to help. If available, wear gloves, but don’t waste time searching for them if the situation is urgent.

Next, check the patient for a response. Speak loudly and gently shake their shoulders. Open the airway and check for breathing for no more than 10 seconds. If they are not breathing or only gasping, start CPR right away.

Then, call emergency services immediately. If someone else is there, have them call and fetch the AED. If you are alone, use speakerphone so you can call for help while continuing CPR.

Using the AED

When the AED arrives, turn it on by pressing the power button. Voice prompts will begin guiding you through the process. While this happens, remove the victim’s clothing from the chest area. Make sure nothing blocks pad placement—remove bras, metal jewellery, or medical patches if present.

Switch the AED to adult or child mode, as needed. Then, take out the pads and apply them to the chest as shown in the diagram. One pad goes under the right collarbone. The other goes on the left side, under the armpit. For infants, use the front and back placement.

Press the pads firmly to the skin. The AED will then begin analysing the heart rhythm. Clearly announce, “Stand clear!” and ensure no one is touching the patient.

If a shock is advised, either press the shock button or wait for the device to deliver it automatically, depending on your model. Afterwards, the AED will tell you to resume CPR.

Continuing Care

The device includes a metronome to guide you at 100–120 compressions per minute. Provide 30 compressions and two rescue breaths if trained. If not, continue chest compressions only.

The AED will re-analyse the heart rhythm every two minutes and prompt the next steps. Continue CPR until help arrives or the person shows signs of life. If you’re alone, do your best to continue until you physically can’t.

Final Notes

Learning how to use a Heartsine AED properly can greatly improve a person’s chance of survival. While the idea of using an AED may feel intimidating, these devices are designed to be simple, even under pressure.

Remain calm, follow the voice instructions, and trust the device to guide you. Most importantly, act quickly. Every second counts.
